episode 17:
Bob Marley, Pearls and Counting the Cost

“I think joy and sweetness and affection are a spiritual path. We’re here to know God, to love and serve God, and to be blown away by the beauty and miracle of nature. You just have to get rid of so much baggage to be light enough to dance, to sing, to play. You don’t have time to carry grudges; you don’t have time to cling to the need to be right.”

-Anne Lamott

Scripture Reading: Matthew 13:44-52

There are far, far too many Christians who read the parable of the fishing net and think, “Yes! Finally, at last, when all is said and done, all these jerks and sinners will get their comeuppance and I’ll be proved to be right!” This is a terrible way of reading that parable. Instead, notice that all the fish are swimming around together, and it’s God who scoops them up and then separates the good ones from the bad. That’s his job, not ours. So instead, find some time each day this week to swim around with some other fish who may not believe the same way you do about faith, life, politics, child-rearing philosophies, favorite authors, the merits of coffee, or any of the other half-million things we find to disagree about. Swim with them, and find yourself blown away by the beauty and miracle of their existence.
